About
What is a Course Buyout?
The University allows tenure-track and tenured faculty to devote up to 25% time during the academic year and 100% time during the summer months to grants work. Course buyouts are required when time devoted to grants work exceeds 25% time, and/or the faculty member is scheduled to teach summer courses. Faculty cannot buyout time in increments less than 25%.
Faculty requesting course buyouts should keep in mind the constraint that all faculty members need to teach a minimum of one course each year.
Process
Requesting a Course Buyout
Requests for course buyouts for the upcoming academic year should be submitted by the Department Chair with their annual Workload document, for approval from the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. When making course buyout requests, Department Chairs should pay particular attention to the research funding support for graduate students in the individual’s group as well as the department's teaching needs and coverage if the proposed course buyout(s) are approved.
Processing Buyouts in Workday
Once approved, departmental administrators should process course buyouts in Workday via a Costing Change BP as follows. Please note, when calculating the buyout, salary should be the base rate only, not the base rate plus supplements.
- 1 course buyout per academic semester, spread over the academic year = 25% x 9mo salary
- 1 course buyout per academic semester, spread over one semester = 50% x 4.5mo salary
Course Buyouts and Fringe Benefits
Faculty requesting course buyouts should keep in mind that fringe will need to be added to the final buyout budget, since fringe is considered a direct cost to a sponsored project and therefore charged on any and all payroll transactions. For more information, please see the OSP webpages on Direct Costs and Fringe Rates and Guidelines.
