About
Faculty Assessment of Teaching
Faculty should have regular reviews and observations of their teaching, including expert evaluations performed by the Consultations in Teaching Excellence (CITE) program, peer assessments, and reflective teaching observations. These assessments are part of the dossiers for Promotion and Tenure, Mid-Probationary and Third-Year Reviews, and Comprehensive Periodic Reviews (CPR).
For more information on the importance of peer teaching observations, as well as how to implement feedback to get the most from these reviews, please see the Center for Teaching and Learning's Peer Observation of Teaching guide.
Promotion and Tenure Review Schedule
Promotion and Tenure Review Schedule
For all faculty going up for promotion, the following teaching evaluations are required:
Peer and Expert Teaching Evaluations
The University requires a minimum of three evaluations of faculty’s teaching during their time in current rank. CNS requires that at least one of these evaluations is conducted by the expert teaching evaluator through the Consulations in Teaching Excellence (CITE) program; the remaining evaluations can be done by faculty peers.
For Professors who receive a “Does Not Meet Expectations” or “Unsatisfactory” ranking and teaching was considered an issue, an external evaluation will be part of the remediation plan.
Candidate’s Reflection on Observing a Peer’s Class
The goal of this requirement is for faculty themselves to have the opportunity to observe instructional approaches of their colleagues and reflect in writing on how those observations might inform their own teaching. A minimum of two reflective evaluations are required and must be conducted during faculty's current time in rank.

CITE External/Expert Evaluations
CITE External/Expert Evaluations
Every Fall semester, the Consulations in Teaching Excellence (CITE) program will contact departments to confirm which faculty members will need an expert, external evaluation done prior to the upcoming academic year. For example, if a faculty member will be going up for their mid-probationary review in 2021-22, CITE will follow up with the department in the Fall of 2020 to schedule an evaluation.
For any questions or concerns regarding faculty who are being considered for an external evaluation, please contact Kristin Patterson.
