Jacob Van Geffen graduated in 2018 as a Dean's Honored Graduate in Computer Science with Honors, receiving a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.S. in Mathematics, with the Pure Mathematics option. A member of both Dean's and Turing Scholars, he was recognized for his achievements in research, academics and leadership. Today, he is on fellowship in the University of Washington's computer science graduate program.
With strong science and mathematics skills, Jacob researched programming languages, analysis and synthesis. His thesis, "Program Synthesis for the Modern Programmer," grew out of these research interests. Working in the lab of Işıl Dillig, Jacob developed innovations that led to his coauthoring two papers for PLDI, one of the most selective and prestigious computer science publication opportunities and the top venue for publishing programming-language research. Jacob also excelled in his undergraduate and graduate courses, maintaining a near-perfect grade-point average throughout his time at UT.
Jacob received numerous honors and scholarships, including an Unrestricted Endowed Presidential Scholarship and a Computing Research Association (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award Honorable Mention. He was active in numerous leadership roles, serving as director for Kids who Code, an organization that teaches programming skills to underprivileged youth; as IT Director for the college's Natural Sciences Council; and as a proctor for classes taught in the Department of Computer Science.
