Why the Chemistry Intensive Workshop?
The workshop is designed to help students make the transition to the rigor and expectations of a university level science course. A roadblock to deep conceptual understanding in college level chemistry is the inability of the novice learner to connect macroscopic observations with microscopic concepts. Moreover, chemistry for many students seems like a distant memory from their sophomore year.
This 4 day workshop is designed to help the students learn those vital processing skills in real time by exposing the students to general chemistry lessons as they are presented in our large enrollment general chemistry course. Emphasis will be place on the prerequisite knowledge that is demanded of student in college chemistry. In addition to learning strategies for success in chemistry, students will be exposed to learning strategies that will help them succeed in all of their University science courses.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in both in-class active learning exercises as well as out-of-class online learning activities. Student will participate in both formative and summative assessment to learn to gauge their own learning as well as meet their future chemistry teachers and peers. The goal is to help the student understand what they need to succeed before they start their first college level chemistry course such that they will be primed and ready to begin learning on Day 1 of their Freshman year.
