Dear Students, We are now heading into the second full week of classes. And it is Labor Day. So you have a whole day off to relax, enjoy Austin, study and think about graduation. What?!!
For all the freshmen you should become accustomed to the series of questions you will get from family and friends. They progress from, "Where are you going to college?" to "What are you going to major in?" to "What are you going to do after graduation?" There is a whole other list that follows but I will let you discover those on your own.
Back to graduation. It is not that you need a definitive plan today, it is simply that you should be thinking about it. The more you think about where you are going the better decisions you can make about what to do while you are here at UT.
Whatever your interest I'm guessing we have a related Student Organization. If there isn't one, take the opportunity to start one. Looking for advice about Health Professions? You'll want to look at going to a Health Professions Office event. Wondering about other careers? Check out the tools for career exploration with the CNS Career Services Office.
And know that you are not alone in planning for the future. This very week, our College is having what it's calling Discovery Education Week, where faculty are thinking about the future of undergraduate learning in Natural Sciences. This Thursday, dozens of classes taught by award-winning faculty will host visits by other course instructors, who themselves are planning ahead for future classes by seeing what they can learn.
Whatever you're interested in now might not be the place you end up. But you can't even change your mind if you don't start thinking ahead now.
Have a great Labor Day, Dr. Vanden Bout
