Dear Students,
This past weekend was Family Weekend, and it had me reflecting on the people who have helped me over the years: from high school teachers who put in extra time and effort to better my education, to college professors who showed me what research was about, to family friends who provided a home away from home when I was in graduate school, to my parents who gave me constant support. I’m not alone in that experience. While it takes a great deal of personal effort to succeed at the University, most students are at UT in part as a result of help and support that they have received over the years. This could be from family, teachers, friends, neighbors, or other individuals. Whoever that might be, everyone has some one to thank for helping them be the person they are today.
So this week, rather than rambling on in a long email, I’m going to ask you to do some writing. Send a note, email, letter, text, or other message to someone who helped you get to where you are. It doesn’t need to be long. A few words are enough to let them know that you appreciate their help along the way. It will only take a minute. So just do it.
Best,
- Dr. Vanden Bout
