Science is Life

Science is Life

Dear Students,

I recently learned about an amazing scientist named Dr. Maynard Daly: the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry in the United States, in 1947. Dr. Daly grew up in a house surrounded by the love of science and discovered a love of chemistry in high school. After completing her doctorate at Columbia University, she went on to conduct research on the composition and metabolism of components of the cell nucleus. Science was her life, and she passed it on to traditionally underrepresented students through her work in the community to increase enrollments in graduate science programs.

As a professor of chemistry myself, I can relate to her love of science. In fact, as CNS students I'm guessing many of you can as well. While I'm sure you are getting plenty of science in your courses, don't forget to take advantage of all the science around you. Here are just a few of the events and opportunities this week:

As always, more options for this week are below. Celebrate your curiosity and the way you see the world because science is life.

Best,
Dr. Vanden Bout
