Ramadan Mubarak

Ramadan Mubarak

Dear Students,

First of all, I'd like to wish all of our Muslim students happy Ramadan! I hope this time is fulfilling for you.

For students who are not familiar with the month of Ramadan, it began yesterday, May 5th, and is a month when Muslims fast, pray, and work to do more good in the world.

I wanted to take a moment to share some ideas about how we can celebrate and create a welcome environment for all:

  1. As many of you know, fasting from sunrise to sunset is central to Ramadan, so it's respectful to avoid offering bites or sips of food and drink to anyone who may be fasting during those hours.
  2. Definitely continue to have dinner parties and celebrations. If you're planning one, schedule it for after sundown so Muslim friends can fully participate. You can even incorporate some new traditional Ramadan recipes.
  3. Tell your friends "Happy Ramadan!" or even better "Ramadan mubarak!" which means "Have a blessed Ramadan!"

Simple acts like this make our college a more inclusive, welcoming place – the kind of place where everyone has opportunities to learn, both about science and about one another.

Best,
Dr. Vanden Bout
