Plan some time for yourself

Plan some time for yourself

Dear Students,

Congratulations on making it to the home stretch of another unusual semester. Over the past year and half, you've faced challenges that few students before you faced. The pandemic changed how we go to class, how we interact with each other, how we do science, how we explore the world around us and many other aspects of our professional and personal lives. I'm proud of the resilience you have shown in completing this semester.

When I was a college student, the semester-end often brought mixed feelings. On the one hand, I was relieved and elated to be done with my school work. But this happiness sometimes gave way to feelings of malaise and even anxiety. Without the demands of my classes and other school activities, I didn't quite know what to do with myself.

My request to you is, once finals are done, give yourself permission to rest and disconnect from school and technology. It may feel unsettling, but taking time to rest is important for your body and your brain. You've earned the right to take some time to do something for yourself, or to do nothing at all, guilt-free. So put it on the calendar now for after that last final is over.

I hope you have a wonderful winter break, and I look forward to seeing you, relaxed and recharged, in 2022!

Best,
Dr. Drew
