Dear Students,
It is about half way through the fall semester. Whether you are a new student or this is your last year at UT, it is surprising how fast time can move while you are here. Before you know it, you will be graduating. So while you should be focused on your academics, don’t let time slip away before you have a chance to pursue other interests. It is never too soon to think about what you might do after graduation. It is never too soon to pick up some experience with leadership, networking, event planning, or other “soft skills”. Working with a student organization is a great opportunity to acquire such experience. Lucky for you, CNS has many very active student organizations.
Not sure where to start? How about Natural Sciences Week? This is an event brought to the students of the college by the Natural Sciences Council—and it’s happening this week!
Natural Sciences Week kicks off with The Big Bang, tomorrow (Monday 10/13), from 5:00-7:00 p.m., at the intersection of Speedway and the East Mall (Welch Hall if it rains). This event showcases the student organizations in the college. Whether you’re a first semester freshman who wants to expand their horizons or a graduating senior who has been meaning to get more experience but has never gotten around to it, or somewhere in between, now is your chance.
The rest of the week is filled with opportunities to learn more about CNS. There is “What to do with your degree?” on Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 in Welch Hall. Wednesday is the Neuroscience Brain Tank (NHB 1.720 noon-3:00) and the Star Party (RLM 4.102 and roof 7:00-10:00 p.m.). Thursday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Gearing Courtyard is the open house for the School of Human Ecology “Food, Fashion, and Family”. Finally, on Friday is “ROADS to Research” 3:30-5:30 in POB 2.402.

And this year, Natural Sciences Week has a one-time only preview event just before The Big Bang kicks off! At 4:45 p.m., at Speedway and the East Mall, I will be accepting an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from Dean Kopp (former Assoc. Dean of Undergraduate Education). So if you want to see me cold and wet, you may want to come a bit early. Sadly, betting on if I will yell (and if so, how loudly) is frowned upon by the college.
