The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation makes the awards for early career scientists who "show the most outstanding promise of making fundamental contributions to new knowledge."
Each Sloan fellow receives $45,000 over two years to be used on research of the fellow's choice.
Olsson works in algebraic and arithmetic geometry. His research has applications in several areas of mathematics including geometry and number theory.
Tsai, also a member of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, centers his research on the development of computational methods and their applications to problems in physical and biological sciences and other areas such as control and computer vision.
