UTeach Executive Director and physics professor Michael Marder has been selected as the recipient of The University of Texas at Austin's 2020 Civitatis Award.
Each year, the university president chooses up to two faculty members to recognize for their dedicated and meritorious service to the University above and beyond the regular expectations for teaching, research, and service.
Marder is Executive Director and co-founder of UTeach, a university-based preparation program for secondary STEM teachers that began at UT Austin in 1997. Since 2005, UTeach has expanded to 45 universities in 21 states and the District of Columbia. A condensed matter physicist, he is also Director of the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics.
The Civitatis Award was established in 1997 to recognize outstanding faculty citizenship. Among the criteria for selection, the awardee must be "a person of such integrity, stature, demonstrated ability and renown that the university community, including alumni, faculty, staff and students, will take pride in and be inspired by his or her recognition."
Past College of Natural Sciences recipients include John Durbin (Mathematics), Shelley Payne (Molecular Biosciences) and David Hillis (Integrative Biology).
