Dear Students,
I was kind of lucky in school, as I stumbled in to an opportunity to be involved in a faculty member's research project in sophomore year that continued through the rest of my college career. It helped me really know what my eventual field of study was like and what were the opportunities for discovery and applications. But I felt truly lucky when I had a chance to present my work. I still remember my faculty mentor driving me out to an international meeting of scientists occurring on the outskirts of town at a major laboratory and the thrill (a.k.a. anxiety) of giving a summary of our proposed work. I remember the feeling of accomplishment when presenting a status report and final summary for my senior thesis class. While others in the class asked many hard questions, I also realized I was the expert in the room about my project, and I was instead nervous about making a coherent presentation and making convincing arguments that we'd proven our point. It was at this point that I felt really part of a community of scholars.
You all have this kind of opportunity every year! Each year the College organizes the Undergraduate Research Forum. The Forum is a large poster session where you can present your work. Details are below. College of Natural Sciences Undergraduate Research Forum
Friday, April 11, 2014 in Welch Hall
All CNS undergraduate students who have participated in research (with CNS faculty, with faculty in other colleges, or at other institutions as summer REU participants, internships at state health agencies, internships in companies, etc) are encouraged to present. The event will feature poster oral presentations by our top student researchers as well as cash awards for research and presentation excellence. The Undergraduate Research Forum Web Site is found HERE. Posters can be at all levels: you can present a proposal for an experiment or study you would like to do and has been discussed with a faculty member, you can present a project you are building or in the process of undertaking, or you can present a poster on a project for which you've already obtained results. All posters will be judged differently according to how far along are the projects. Here are the steps:

2. Abstract Submission - Due March 17, 2014
3. Preparing your poster: To assist you with preparation for the Forum, SURGE (Science Undergraduate Research Group) is sponsoring a series of workshops (with food) you can attend to find out more information and learn how to prepare and present a poster. The first is already past, but the next, Output Workshop, will be Thursday, April 3, 2014, from 2:00pm - 5:00pm, in PAI 5.38N.
