Dear Students,
I have always been a "Jeopardy!" fan. So I was saddened the other day when I saw that long time host Alex Trebek passed away. As a host, he stood out as someone who was able to build excitement and interest while maintaining a kind and calm approach to leading the show. At almost the same time, I got a notice that Jeopardy was looking for college students for their National College Championship, and I had to smile.
Whenever I hear about opportunities like this, I can't help but be reminded of one of my favorite campus faculty leaders, Prof. Richard Reddick from the College of Education. If you don't know Dr. Reddick, you should. He is an award-winning teacher, alum and scholar whose work focuses on mentoring relationships. He is also a game show super star who walked away a champion on "Jeopardy!" and a number of other shows. But the real reason you should know Dr. Reddick is that he is a champion for equity on campus. As the inaugural Associate Dean for Equity, Community Engagement, and Outreach in the College of Education, he is not only leading change in his college, but he is a leader for all of campus. And he is someone I turn to for advice and guidance as we work to create an equitable environment for all students in the College of Natural Sciences. This video is a good introduction to Dr. Reddick and some of his latest work here at UT, to help our campus look at the context and history of "The Eyes of Texas."
Getting to know all of the amazing people of the Forty Acres is more than anyone can do in just four years. But we're a big community, and there are many friendly folks worth making time to meet.
