Gail Chovan—an apparel designer who produces one-of-a-kind artful constructions and also lectures in the Division of Textiles and Apparel—is off to Paris Fashion Week to exhibit her new collection, Defiance.
Defiance will be exhibited for five days at the Galerie Virginie Louvet. The collection is made from a 1930's movie banner for the Mary Astor film, Behind Office Doors, and highlights both the ephemeral, disposable nature of fashion and, through the film reference, the unrecognized power of working women. The pieces will be draped on mannequins hung on hooks from the gallery walls.
"I am transforming verbal snippets cut from the Behind Office Doors movie banner into frock coats, trousers, sheath dresses and blouses," says Chovan. "Visitors will be invited to experience the installation of a 'fashion' collection by walking through customarily anthropomorphized shapes that have been dehumanized, suspended and covered with lifeless garments."
