Harrington Fellowship Supports Three Natural Sciences Graduate Students
Three winners of the university's most prestigious fellowship program, the Donald D. Harrington Fellows Program, are currently working in the College of Natural Sciences. The three graduate students—from California Institute of Technology, Georgia State and The University of Texas at Austin—are researching how planets form beyond our solar system, how our brains make associations between rewards and the environments in which we get them, and how corals respond and adapt to changes in their environment.
Announced last fall, the 2014 recipients are two visiting faculty fellows and 15 graduate fellows who are working with UT Austin colleagues to delve into topics covering a broad spectrum of research and exploration. The three graduate fellows in the College of Natural Sciences are:
- Sarah Barfield, UT Austin — Ecology of reef-building corals
- Brian Bondy, Georgia State — Brain plasticity and the ability to process information
- Raquel Martinez, California Institute of Technology — Star and planet formation

The Donald D. Harrington Fellows Program is one of the best visiting scholar and graduate fellow programs in the nation. The fellowships support young faculty members and graduate students who have extraordinary academic records and a broad range of distinctive achievements. Sybil Harrington, the granddaughter of one of the first families to settle Amarillo, established the program as a tribute to her husband.
