Dear Students,
September 24th will be Family Day. This is a chance for families to come to UT and see what campus life is like for students. Many families come every year, but often the weekend is dominated by the families of freshmen. They are keen to see their children and learn about their students' new home away from home.
I remember my freshman year, showing my parents my dorm room, introducing them to friends and walking them around campus. What had already become a bit ordinary to me, they were excited to see and learn about.
Even if your family is not able to make it to Austin on the 24th, I would encourage you to reach out. Take the time to let the people who aren't here with you everyday know what you are doing. They would love to hear from you (even those of you who aren't freshmen).
And if your family can come down for the weekend, even better. They can find information and register for the event at www.utaustinfamilyweekend.com. We'd love to see them and let them know more about the College of Natural Sciences.
Finally, it is time for the first round of exams. I'd wish you luck, but luck has nothing to do with it. Instead, I'll encourage you to make a plan and study smarter not harder. Be active in your learning, and test yourself. Be honest in your assessment, and take responsibility for your learning.
Best,
Dr. Vanden Bout
