Explore UT and Explore Your Wonder‏

Plus bad science jokes

Dear students,

Yesterday was Explore UT, and we were fortunate to welcome families from across the state. It was inspiring to see students from across the college sharing the knowledge they've gained. At one table, crafts demonstrating colors, at another explanations of crystallography and symmetry, at another a quiz on anatomy, and at yet another demonstrations of conservation of angular momentum. Many of you were out yesterday, sharing your gifts. In our visitors' eyes were the gratitude for your hospitality and wonder at the things we do.

Explore UT serves as a reminder of the privilege we share as stewards of the state's university. We pursue lofty ideals, create new knowledge, and share in a community which values the diverse talents we bring. To be sure, each of you has worked hard to be here, and many of you overcame personal, family, or economic challenges to pursue your dreams; we shared some of those challenges on Wednesday at our Town Hall event. But each day, we grow in skills that are forged in this place.

This week high school seniors across the state learned whether they will be able to come to UT next year, the class of 2018. They have good reason to celebrate and a lot to look forward to. I know you are likely thinking about midterms and anticipating spring break, but I hope you can carry with you the same sense of wonder surrounding what you have done and anticipation of your opportunities ahead.

Best wishes for the coming week,
--Dr. Kopp

PS: Each week I try to let you know about events, scholarship opportunities, and important deadlines. For this week's complete listing, check out this link.

PPS: Bad science jokes for the week:

-Have you heard the one about the sick chemist? If you can't helium, and you can't curium, you'll probably have to barium.

     -What's a cat-ion afraid of? Dog-ions.

-Why did the bear dissolve in water? It was polar.

-Why did the professor divide sin by tan? Just cos.

-Two chemists walk in to a bar. The first chemist says "I'll have some H2O." The second chemist says "I'll have some H2O too." The second chemist dies.

-My physicist friend Power has been stressed out all week. Her boss has been making her work over time.

There, you can't get that minute back.
