Dear Students,

As a neuroscience faculty member, faculty advisor and now a student dean, I frequently hear from students looking for guidance. About what? Truth be told, the most common issue is the functional anatomy of the basal ganglia. (It really is complicated.) But the second-most common issue is careers.

We tend to focus a lot on the career options that are most visible to us—the jobs our family members have, the jobs we see portrayed on TV, jobs at the university, like "professor." The reality is that your natural sciences degree will make available to you a world of career options that goes far beyond what most of us realize. During your time here in CNS, I encourage you to explore this world and discover paths that lie outside your current field of vision. It so happens that this month there is a great opportunity to do some of this exploration. On Wednesday, October 27th from 11am – 4pm, CNS Career Services and the Engineering Career Assistance Center (ECAC) will co-host the Bioscience and Biotechnology Virtual Career Fair. You can:

  • Come and meet with close to 40 employers, graduate programs and health professions schools who want to network with CNS Life Science and Computer Science majors.
  • Attend and network with industry recruiters and graduate school admissions representatives.
  • Share resumes and explore different career options.
  • Find a summer internship with employers, including Luminex, the City of Austin, Epic, Scripps and Eli Lilly.
  • If you are a senior deciding what to do when you graduate, this career fair is a great opportunity to connect with recruiters from the bioscience, biomedical and biotechnology industries.

To see a full list of who is attending and to participate in the virtual fair, create an ECAC Account. If you would like to have your resume reviewed before the fair, please email it to cnscareerpeers@austin.utexas.edu with a note that you are preparing for the Bio Fair, and they will return it to you with comments and revisions within three business days. Or, if you would like to talk to a coach about how to prepare for the fair, make an appointment in Handshake. While the world can always use more doctors and professors (…and, of course, associate deans), I hope you'll spend some time exploring the many other impactful and fulfilling career paths open to you with a CNS degree. Remember that our experts in CNS Career Services and the Health Professions Office are here to guide you.

Best,

Dr. Drew

P.S. I hope you are all enjoying Natural Sciences Week! Although tonight's outdoor celebration was postponed, there is still a lot to engage with.
