Kami Hull, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the 2018 Novartis Early Career Award in Chemistry. The award, presented to outstanding early‐career researchers who are within 10 years of establishing an independent research career, comes with an unrestricted, two-year grant of $100,000.
Hull's research focuses on developing more efficient processes for synthetic organic chemistry, processes that speed up synthesis and reduce associated waste. Specifically, she and her team study transition metal-catalyzed reactions.
Hull received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2009 working with professor Melanie Sanford. Upon graduation, she moved to California as an NIH postdoctoral fellow in professor Barry Trost's laboratory at Stanford University from 2009–2012. She began her academic career at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2012, and joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin in 2018.
Hull has received a number of awards, including being named one of C&E News' Inaugural Talented Twelve, the NSF CAREER Award, a Sloan Research Fellowship and the Amgen Young Investigator Award.
