Captured in a Flash: The Insect Photos of John Abbott

Captured in a Flash: The Insect Photos of John Abbott

Dr. John Abbott uses high speed flash photography to capture insects, bats and other animals in motion around Texas. The technique gives him (and you) the ability to see these creatures in a way that is impossible with the naked eye. Some of his subjects, like the phorid fly attacking the fire ants, are no larger than a pinhead. But with this technique, the viewer can see the delicate iridescence of the fly's beautiful wings.

Abbott spends much of his time at the Brackenridge Field Laboratory. He is curator of entomology at the Texas Natural Science Center and a senior lecturer for the School of Biological Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. Beautiful photography John. I'd love a walk-thru of the technology, particularly if the hardware investment isn't too outrageous.

John's ingenuity and technical prowess works so beautifully with his entomolophilia. Thank you for compiling some of his stellar images along with his narration. A treat to hear all the way from Germany.

I've really enjoyed this! The pictures are incredible and it's so fascinating to listen to Dr. Abbott narrate.

These are fantastic! I photograph a lot of insects that aren't moving, which is hard enough! Your images are awesome.
