The Humboldt Foundation has chosen UT Austin professor of integrative biology Mathew Leibold to receive the Humboldt Research Award in recognition of his lifetime achievements in research. The award is valued at around $70,000.
Award winners are invited to spend up to one year cooperating on a long-term research project with specialist colleagues at research institutions in Germany. Leibold plans to collaborate with colleagues at the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) in Leipzig, the University of Oldenburg and the University of Regensburg.
Leibold combines classical ecological ideas, including food webs and biodiversity, with dispersal to see how food webs and biodiversity depend on the spatial connectivity of the world. His work reveals that the spatial connections among ecosystems is critical to the way they function and to the distribution of biodiversity on the planet.
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation was established by the German government to promote international academic cooperation between scientists and scholars from Germany and from abroad.
