Twenty-one professors in The University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Mathematics were named 2013 Fellows of the American Mathematical Society (AMS).
This is the AMS program's initial year.
The fellows designation recognizes AMS members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication and utilization of mathematics.
"The AMS is the world's largest and most influential society dedicated to mathematical research, scholarship, and education,” said AMS President Eric M. Friedlander. “Recent advances in mathematics include solutions to age-old problems and key applications useful for society. The new AMS Fellows Program recognizes some of the most accomplished mathematicians - AMS members who have contributed to our understanding of deep and important mathematical questions, to applications throughout the scientific world, and to educational excellence."
The university’s 2013 AMS fellows are: Daniel Allcock, Todd Arbogast, William Beckner, David Ben-Zvi, Lewis Bowen, Luis Caffarelli, Elliott Cheney, Jr., Daniel Freed, Irene Gamba, Robert Gompf, Raymond Heitmann, John Luecke, Edward Odell, Charles Radin, Alan Reid, Haskell Rosenthal, Michael Starbird, John Tate, Karen Uhlenbeck, Jeffrey Vaaler and Robert Williams.
The College of Natural Sciences Department of Mathematics is known throughout the world for its distinguished faculty and stimulating mathematical environment. It has an excellent research reputation, a strong graduate program and a full range of outstanding undergraduate programs. The department's 55-member faculty includes two members of the National Academy of Science, two MacArthur Fellows, five Guggenheim Fellows, one Abel Prize winner and two Wolf Prize winners.
