A Message from Two Special Guests

A Message from Two Special Guests

Note from Dean David Vanden Bout: The College of Natural Sciences now has two full-time CARE counselors who are here to help students cope with a wide range of mental health-related challenges. Our CARE counselors are Nic Dahlberg, LPC, and Andrea Ortega, LCSW-S. I offered them this space this week to connect with you all.

Dear Students,

Greetings from your CNS CARE Counselors! We wanted to drop by and say hello as well as acknowledge how difficult this semester can feel. We realize that the uncertainty of the future as well as the challenges of online/hybrid learning can feel like added pressure. It might feel like it is hard to stay focused, strenuous to hop from one Zoom class to the next and tough to keep a daily routine.

We want to encourage you to give yourself permission to take care of yourselves during this incredibly demanding time. Here are some options for support:

  • Talk it through: If you're into talking, schedule a visit with one of us. Our office hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-10am. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-2pm. If you're not available during these times, we'll work to accommodate your schedule. Here is more about what we offer and our contact info.
  • Tech support: If you're into tech-based solutions, download the free Thrive at UT app. It has a lot of great resources for UT students.
  • Skills workshops: If you're into gaining some new skills, our workshops include a range of offerings, from mindfulness-based meditation to how to find a counselor. Signing up for workshops is quick and easy. We especially recommend the How to Deal: COVID-19 Edition workshop, a two-part series that highlights managing stress related to the current pandemic.

Sincerely,

Andrea and Nic

Joke: What should you do when no one laughs at your science jokes? Keep trying until you get a reaction.
