Kristen Grauman and Peter Stone. Texas Science Festival. Science for a changing world.

Understanding the nature of “intelligence” is one of the greatest scientific challenges of our time. The field of artificial intelligence is meeting this challenge by developing algorithms for creating robust robots that can coexist with us in the real world. Hear from leading experts in machine learning and robotics about how intelligent, fully autonomous robots will shape the future.

Featuring:

  • Dr. Kristen Grauman is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at UT Austin. Her research in computer vision and machine learning focuses on visual recognition, video and embodied perception. She is an IEEE Fellow, AAAI Fellow and Sloan Fellow, and a recipient of the NSF CAREER award, the ONR Young Investigator award, the PAMI Young Researcher Award, the Computers and Thought Award, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Dr. Grauman was inducted into the UT Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 2017. She received her Ph.D. from MIT.
  • Dr. Peter Stone is the David Bruton, Jr. Centennial Professor and associate chair in the Department of Computer Science at UT Austin. He is also the Director of Texas Robotics. Dr. Stone’s research focuses on artificial intelligence, including machine learning (especially reinforcement learning), multiagent systems, and robotics. Professor Stone received his Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University. He co-founded Cogitai, Inc., a startup company focused on continual learning, and currently serves as Executive Director of Sony AI America. He has received numerous research and teaching awards, including the University of Texas System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award and induction into the UT Austin Academy of Distinguished Teachers.
