George I. Sanchez Centennial Professorship in Liberal Arts (Holder)Brain research on transcranial lasers, memory enhancement, neuroprotection, neurocognitive disorders-
Prof. Dr. Francisco Gonzalez-Lima and his trainees are world leaders in brain research on the relationship between brain energy metabolism, memory and neurobehavioral disorders. Dr. Gonzalez-Lima holds the George I. Sanchez Centennial Professorship at the University of Texas at Austin, the first endowed chair in the USA named in honor of a Hispanic professor. He graduated with honors from Tulane University, New Orleans, with B.S. in Biology and B.A. in Psychology degrees, and obtained his Ph.D. in Anatomy and Neurobiology from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, which honored him with a Distinguished Alumnus Award. He completed his postdoctoral training in Behavioral Neuroscience at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, as an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow. Dr. Gonzalez-Lima has been elected Fellow and Founding Chair of the Neuroscience section of the Texas Academy of Science, and elected Fellow and USA Councilor of the International Behavioral Neuroscience Society. He has been a visiting neuroscientist in Germany, England and Canada, and has delivered over a hundred invited lectures about his research at universities around the world. His brain research has been funded for over 30 years and has contributed over 300 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, chapters and books.

Our lab is pursuing three research directions in behavioral, cognitive and clinical neurosciences:
- Transcranial laser stimulation of human cognitive and emotional functions
- Neuroenhancement using metabolic interventions for neuroprotection and memory inprovement
- Novel animal models of human psychopathology and neurocognitive disorders
We study these topics in humans and animals using a combination of near-infrared lasers, behavioral analyses, pharmacological manipulations, metabolic brain mapping, and quantitative modeling.
- Transcranial laser stimulation of human cognitive and emotional functions
