Full Stream Name: Maker Space
Research Educator: Stuart Reichler & Tim Riedel
Welcome to the FRI Maker Space Stream ~ Come learn how to make and innovate!
The Maker Space is in a shared space with the FRI DIY Diagnostics Stream. We collaborate closely with the Inventors Program and the College of Engineering Maker Space. Students have access to 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics and even a wet lab for chemistry and molecular biology based projects.
Students will learn how to create scientific tools and products for use in university and industry research labs. They will identify a need for an improved tool and then be trained on fabrication skills such as 3D printing and laser cutting, synthetic biology, and chemical synthesis. These skills will be used to build and refine prototypes and the performance of the the new tool will be compared to any preexisting gold standards. Potential needs addressed by the stream are the synthesis of DNA, enzymes, proteins, molecular probes, and standards; repairing and calibration of instrumentation; and fabrication of prototypes for research and instruction.
